There is something wrong with a justice system that does not allow a defendant's previous convictions to be considered as evidence. Interesting to come across the Commission of Enquiry into Police Conduct (2004) which mentioned rape complainants Judith Garrett (Kaitaia) and Louise Nicholas.

In his book Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews (2001) he is willing to look at the Church's darkest secrets while remaining a practising Catholic.

Ants - More Non Toxic Control Methods

Have had great success at keeping ants out of my kitchen by laying down pieces of mandarin peel on the floor in front of their entry points. (May need to replace them once they dry out). No more squashed ants all over the floor every day. It appears that ants do not like citrus. Smearing vaseline around any small holes they use as entry points is also highly successful. I also use baking soda sprinkled on window sills. Have also tried spraying Ecostore's citrus spray cleaner on ant trails and entry points outside the house, with some success.

Chemtrails - coming soon to a sky above you

29 August 2005, right before NZ's national Elections, chemtrails were clearly visible above the western part of the sky over Wellington (NZ's capital city and seat of government). I watched as a virtually invisible plane laid down white trails in the sky at very high altitude. I watched all the commercial jetliners flying beneath. The trails spread out to cover the whole city. The day I left to fly back to Auckland (3 September 2005) more chemtrails were visible. They accompanied the plane in the distance almost all the way back. Both days started off with clear, blue skies which ended up covered in a haze of chemtrails. 27 December 2005, over the Chateau and Mt Ruapehu lots of chemtrails cunningly being laid down behind the clouds all day. Lots of people around with bad coughs and flu in the height of summer. I guess they were more exposed to the chemicals due to the higher altitude. The days following chemtrail sightings, although forecast to be fine, were cloudy, grey and raining. Wellington sees a lot of chemtrail activity. It also sees a lot of uncharacteristic fogs and low cloud which close Wellington's airport for days at a time. I wonder what effect this must have on our economy and government?

Workplace fires - burning down the country.

A lot has happened in NZ in the last 6 months or so.
First a big fire at New World supermarket in Kaitaia, then a big fire at Fonterra's factory in Nelson, then Rod Donald died, next a big fire at a large meatworks in the South Island, then a big fire at a (nasty, polluting) timber mill in Kaitaia and most recently, a big fire at a recycling plant in Otaki.
These workplaces were all large employers in small towns or rural areas. Few of them will rebuild in their entirety and all these fires have resulted in a loss of jobs.
Our current economic system ("Rogernomics") only "works" if there is widespread unemployment. Prior to these fires we had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world (after years of suffering after the implementation of Rogernomics in the 1980's). Wages were finally starting to rise (with the aid of strikes by workers) and various worker friendly govt. policies were brought in.
I guess the workers were getting a bit too "uppity"!

Why does the person who was to lead the Party into the future, with his "buy NZ made" campaign (among others) suddenly get a "virus" and die?
Why does the Green MP with a "hotline" to the media suddenly get sick and die?
My bet's on the Americans or the Chinese.

Why does everything come from China these days?

Once upon a time NZ had factories that made things, now all our clothes come from China - the factory of the world.

"There's an awful lot of product that comes out of China that is actually made in prison factories, where slave labour is used - some of that has got to end up on shelves in New Zealand," - Green Party co-leader Rod Donald.

But if you've ever bought a pair of trousers from Farmers it probably came from a sweatshop closer to home.

Some local heroes are resisting the push to move to China in spite of "economic treachery" by govt agency NZ Trade & Enterprise in pressuring companies to move offshore.

Out of 20 major NZ retailers these are the only ones who have formal processes in place for ensuring their goods don't come from sweatshops: Placemakers, Repco, Freedom Furniture, No. 1 Shoe Warehouse, Pumpkin Patch, The Warehouse (NZ Herald graphic 30.7.05).

Never underestimate people power - a 13 year old boy brought Nike to its knees.

Why are we wasting oil on making plastic bags?

Once upon a time when you bought something it was packaged in a paper bag, not a plastic bag.
One of my holiday jobs when I was in high school was working on the factory floor of a major NZ packaging manufacturer in Rongotai, Wellington. (Long gone along with most of NZ's manufacturing companies). I worked on one of a number of large machines which printed out a huge variety of paper bags for all the different retail outlets.
Nowdays if I go shopping I can easily come home with an incredible number of plastic bags from every shop. The smallest of items is packaged in an oversized plastic carry bag. Don't bother asking if they have paper bags - the answer is always no.
Time to put pressure on the retail chains in our local shopping malls to stop wasting diminishing oil supplies. Today I made a start by phoning the head office of my local supermarket asking them to switch to biodegradable bags.
In the meantime I will continue to decline the plastic bags in favour of my reusable hemp, cloth and cornstarch bags. Sorry retailers, you'll have to move to a different form of advertising.

Replacing those nasty toxic chemical cleaners

Vinegar and baking soda are the old standbys plus I've now replaced all my nasty toxic chemical cleaners etc with Ecostore products namely their: dishwash liquid, laundry powder, oxygen whitener, auto dishwash powder, soaps, shampoos, shower cleaner. The good thing is that many of these are now available in my local supermarket and are made in NZ. I also use the odd Ecover product (imported) available at my organic store plus an organic disinfectant (NZ company). These might cost a bit more but you only need to use half what you'd normally use as they are concentrated.

Ants

One of the curses of living in sub tropical Auckland (apart from the govts' tendency to want to aerial spray us with poisons) is that ants love visiting us in our homes in large numbers. (And the aerial spray unfortunately doesn't kill them).
Some easy, somewhat less toxic remedies I have found useful are Vaseline or Vick's Vaporub (you've got to do something with them, right? apart from throwing them away). Smear this around the ants' entry points. They really hate this. It works really well at keeping them out.
If you have a lot around the floor - talcum powder, baking soda or baking powder deals to them well - they don't like walking on this. Or get some non toxic ant liquid in a little bottle from your local organic store.

Trying to move away from plastic

Yesterday I received my order of 200 cornstarch supermarket bags which I will be using for rubbish bags, plus 50 smaller size ones for the rubbish bin in the bathroom and 50 small "pie bags" which will replace the plastic storage bags I used to use for food. This lot should last me for the next year. These bags are much stronger than supermarket bags and have no holes - equals no mess. Next I'll be looking into cornstarch paper plates - good for those days when the dishes are piled up in the sink and I can't find anything clean to eat off.
